If you face much higher rate of Flash Player crashing after update your flash player, it is better to revert for an earlier version. Here how to do it.

ADDITIONAL STUFF FOR GOOGLE CHROME USERS ONLY:

Google Chrome users may experience an additional issue not directly related to the Flash 12.0 problem. Chrome default behavior installs two different versions of Flash. This causes dual version Flash conflicts in game performance. To resolve that problem, follow these steps.

Type this into a browser window.
chrome://plugins/

Check for versions of flash installed on the browser. You should find two sections with location names that end in the following:
Pepperflash:
PepperFlash\pepflashplayer.dll
Regular Flash:
Flash\NPSWF32_11_9_900_170.dll

Disable one of the two. Make sure the version you leave enabled is 11.9. If necessary, uninstall 12.0 and install 11.9 manually.

If your full screen comms problem returns it is probably because Chrome auto-installed Flash 12.0 again. Do another manual reversion if necessary.

Chrome occasionally re enables both versions of Flash on its own so it's good to check plugins from time to time.

OTHER STUFF ABOUT FLASH AND GAME PERFORMANCE:

Flash needs a little bit of under the hood maintenance to get the most out of War Commander. Namely, clearing the Flash cache (which is separate from browser cache) and setting Flash local storage.

This section of instructions covers Windows 7. If you play on a different operating system your commands may be different.

SETTING FLASH LOCAL STORAGE

Rechecking Flash local storage is the first troubleshooting I do whenever the combat server starts to act goofy. No joke: this is a frequent source of problems. Fortunately the check and the fix take just seconds to run.

1. Right click on the game screen. That gets this popup.

2. Select "Settings" then click the folder icon. That opens this dialog.

The default setting for Flash local storage is 100 KB. You can change that manually according to the specs of your computer. I like to do this.

Two things to be aware of as you move the slider:
(a) Flash will restore the 100 KB default on its own. Adobe offers no way in the user interface to prevent this from returning to default, and it happens often. As often as five times in one day, in my experience.
(b) War Commander will start to chew up large amounts of memory when Flash local storage is unlimited. Eventually this will cause the game to crash unless you refresh periodically. To gauge when a refresh is needed open Task Manager and check the memory usage from time to time.

CLEARING FLASH CACHE

This is separate and different from browser cache. Both caches need clearing on a regular basis for optimum game performance. I like to clear caches on the first day of every attack, and occasionally as needed when other problems occur.

1. Right click on the game screen. That gets this popup again.

2. Select Global Settings. That brings up this dialog.

Delete All clears this data, which is all that most people need. You can choose the site by site option if you really want but I never do.

3. Open up Global Settings again and this time select the Advanced tab.

Two things of note here: one is the Delete All button, which clears Flash cache across all your browsers. The other is the Updates selection. As a Chrome user who doesn't want to be bothered by 12.0 reinstalling itself, I've selected the "Notify me" option.

  1. Thanks for the detailed explanation and links. However there is a slight problem with the entire process.

    1. WC does not still work in any of the newly installed browsers. (similar problems as seen in google chrome)
    2. In the event we follow instructions to change the flash version to the earlier version the same makes any video that you want to watch from the net unplayable (as a later version of flash is required). This means you have to constantly enable and disable previous and later versions of flash to ensure that all the videos can be watched and you can play WC.

Commander, it's all about friendly conversation here at "War Commander Strategy" :) I'd love to hear your thoughts!

If anyone has any other questions or requests for this blog, you can either ask in the comments or email me. Please don't feel shy at all! I'm certainly not an expert, but I'll try my hardest to explain what I do know and research what I don't know.
